The Ultimate Pizza Sauce Taste Test

About 7 weeks ago, I gave you the recipe for the most delicious pizza dough you will ever make. For reals. But I left you hanging, because I didn’t offer a nice pizza sauce to compliment it, now did I?

I’m going to rectify that today and give you some delicious options for homemade pizza sauce that are out-of-this-world ah-maze-ING!

So without further ado, I give you The Ultimate Pizza Sauce Taste Test! Feel free to follow along at home if you so desire!

Need an amazing recipe for homemade pizza sauce? These three sauces went head to head in a taste test that will make you want to try all three for yourself!

The Ultimate Pizza Sauce Taste Test

Over the years, I’ve made a number of pizza sauces. The three I will present to you below are my top 3, and I would say they are all worthy of being in your own recipe box! I went ahead and made all three sauces on the same day, made pizza dough (only my favorite of all time, of course!), topped the pizza with all three sauces (each one had a different section of pizza), then proceeded to taste each piece once it was out of the oven and come to a conclusion.

These three sauces went head to head in a taste test that will make you want to try all three for yourself! The results were not as cut and dry as I would have liked. I wanted a clear winner, but that’s not at all what happened. Instead, I found that all three of these sauces were still top 3, none of them butting the other two out of the competition. That means, whatever sauce you choose to use for your Garlic & Oregano Pizza Dough is fine by me! They will all taste spectacular and you will be given an award for your amazing achievements in homemade pizza making. 😉

Let’s get to the recipes and then I’ll share my thoughts on each one and how they fared in the taste test. I will also give you a breakdown of how much I paid for the ingredients.

Pizza Sauce #1

Need an amazing recipe for homemade pizza sauce? These three sauces went head to head in a taste test that will make you want to try all three for yourself! The first pizza sauce recipe comes from the blog, Our Best Bites. I came across this recipe about 3 years ago when I picked up the Our Best Bites cookbook from the library and started making, like, all their delicious food. I figured this would be a great recipe to use most of the time because it is fabulously cheap. I also love that it has a hint of sweetness to it. Lucky for you, you don’t have to go out and buy the book or borrow it from the library in order to get the recipe. You can just click the link below and get the recipe there!

As for my thoughts on this particular sauce when it came to the taste test, well, it was all too familiar to me since it is my go-to sauce these days. Of course, I love it like always, and I feel like it is the best fit for our family right now since it is the cheapest option of the three at just $0.68 per pizza. It also has the least amount of ingredients of all three sauces, which is a bonus.

The ingredients include: tomato paste, water, garlic bread seasoning (which has powdered parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder, oregano, basil, marjoram, and parsley), sugar OR honey, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Winning combination, these are!

Pizza Sauce #1 Cost:

Tomato Paste – $0.62
Garlic Bread Seasoning – $0.45
Honey – $0.15
Onion Powder – $0.10
Red Pepper Flakes – $0.04

Total cost to make Pizza Sauce #1 – $1.36
This sauce makes enough to use on two pizzas, so it comes out to just $0.68 per pizza.

Pizza Sauce #2

Need an amazing recipe for homemade pizza sauce? These three sauces went head to head in a taste test that will make you want to try all three for yourself! The second pizza sauce in our taste test was a recipe I only discovered about six months ago on Pinterest from the blog, Feeling Foodish. This sauce is inexpensive as well at just $0.75 per pizza. I had to substitute dry basil for the fresh basil, which made the cost of the sauce less expensive overall. But, I bet the fresh basil would have added a nice kick to it that would have been well worth the extra cost. The recipe says you can add 1-2 tsp. of sugar, and I added two, which is just what I think it needed. I think this recipe is perfect because it tastes a heck-uv-a-lot like the pizza sauce from a pizzeria. So tasty!

Pizza Sauce #2 Cost:

Tomato Sauce – $1.64
Olive Oil – $0.28
Basil (dried) – $0.48
Sugar – $0.01
Salt – $0.06
Oregano – $0.14
Garlic Powder – $0.19
Onion Powder – $0.11
Red Pepper Flakes – $0.02
Black Pepper – $0.03

Total cost to make Pizza Sauce #2 – $2.96
This sauce makes enough to use on about 4 pizzas, so it comes out to $0.75 per pizza.

Pizza Sauce #3

Need an amazing recipe for homemade pizza sauce? These three sauces went head to head in a taste test that will make you want to try all three for yourself! Finally, the third contender in the pizza sauce taste test was a recipe I found six years ago on a blog called Mindika Moments. This sauce is the most expensive, $1.24 to cover one pizza. It requires a bit more effort on your part, but I love this sauce for it’s pizzazz (did you catch that??) and it’s overall freshness. I feel like this one is the sauce that you should turn to when you are inviting people over for homemade pizza.

Pizza Sauce #3 Cost:

Olive Oil – $0.14
Garlic – $0.24
Tomato Sauce – $0.88
Diced Tomatoes – $0.98
Tomato Paste – $0.62
Basil – $0.96
Parmesan Cheese – $0.78
Balsamic Vinegar – $0.16
Salt – $0.03
Red Pepper Flakes – $0.15

Total cost to make Pizza Sauce #3 – $4.94

Although there was no winner (for me) in our Ultimate Pizza Sauce Taste Test, it might be a good idea to taste test them for yourself! Make a night of it and have everyone get blindfolds on and taste each pizza then rate them. What a fun family night idea!

Do you have an absolutely delicious pizza sauce recipe you are just dying to share??
